Electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming increasingly common on Algarve roads — and with that comes a question many expat property owners are asking for the first time: what do I need to charge my car at home?
The answer depends on what type of vehicle you have, and the difference matters more than most people realise.
Plug-in hybrid or full electric?
Not all hybrid vehicles can be charged at home. A standard self-charging hybrid — such as a Toyota Yaris Hybrid — charges itself through the engine and regenerative braking. It has no charging port and requires no home charging setup whatsoever.
A plug-in hybrid or full electric vehicle is different. These have a charging port on the side of the car and a larger battery that can be charged externally. If your new car has a charging port — you will need a home charging solution.
Can I just use a standard socket?
Technically yes — most plug-in hybrids can be charged using a standard three-pin household socket overnight. For a plug-in hybrid with a smaller battery this is often sufficient, particularly if the car is used mainly for short local journeys around the Algarve.
However there are important caveats. Standard household sockets in Portugal are not designed for sustained overnight charging loads. Older Algarve properties — particularly villas and apartments built before the 1990s — often have electrical systems that were never designed to handle this kind of continuous demand. Charging an EV through a standard socket on an ageing installation is a potential fire risk and should always be assessed by a certified electrician before you start.
The wallbox charger — the right solution for most drivers
A dedicated wallbox charger is the recommended solution for anyone charging a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle at home regularly. A wallbox is a wall-mounted unit — typically installed in a garage, carport or exterior wall — that charges significantly faster than a standard socket and is specifically designed for the job.
In Portugal, wallbox installation must be carried out by a DGEG registered electrician. The work involves assessing your existing consumer unit, installing a dedicated circuit, mounting the charger unit and certifying the installation to Portuguese electrical standards. The entire process typically takes half a day.
For Algarve villa owners with pool pumps, air conditioning systems and other high-demand appliances already running, a professional assessment of your electrical capacity before adding EV charging is essential. Adding significant load to an already stretched system without upgrading the consumer unit first is a common and costly mistake.
What about rental properties?
EV charging is becoming an increasingly sought-after feature for Algarve holiday rentals. Properties with a wallbox charger installed are able to advertise to the growing number of visitors travelling with electric vehicles — a genuine competitive advantage in the premium rental market.
Any EV charging installation in a rental property must be certified to Portuguese standards and included in your electrical compliance documentation for Alojamento Local purposes.
