Residency in Portugal - the D7 Visa

RESIDENCY IN PORTUGAL - THE D7 VISAThe D7 Visa is a residency visa that allows the applicant to obtain a Temporary Residency Permit in Portugal. This option is destined for the applicants that are already retired, for those living from own income, intellectual property and financial investments, or for those that develop a professional religious activity.

The D7 Visa is a two-phase process:

  1. It is initiated at the competent Portuguese Consulate of the applicant’s area of residence where the applicant must book an appointment. Nowadays, in most countries, the appointment at the Consulate is booked via the VFS Global platform, and at the appointment the applicant must lodge all the required documents for the D7 Visa request. When the Visa is issued, it is valid for 4 months and allows the applicant 2 entrances in Portugal.

  2. With the issuance of the D7 Visa usually the Portuguese Consulate books an appointment for the applicant at the Immigration Services in Portugal to conclude the process and therefore issue the temporary residency permit.

The temporary residency permit is valid for 2 years, renewable for 3 years. After 5 years of legal residency in Portugal the applicant is entitled to apply for permanent residency and/or citizenship, provided that the applicant fulfills all the legal requirements, including the knowledge of the Portuguese language.

Furthermore, this type of Visa allows the applicant to bring his family members to Portugal under the family reunification regime, so all family members can enjoy living in Portugal.
