Burglar dies during robbery at British couple's Vilamoura home

pspA recidivist burglar died in the early hours of Sunday morning at a property at Volta do Pardal on the Vilamoura estate.

A British couple and their son were woken at around 04:00 and discovered a burglar in their house.

Property owner Trevor Taylor is understood to have pinned down the thief with his son's help while his wife Jill phoned the local police.

The intruder, originally from Cape Verde, who already had valuables and the key to the family jaguar in a holdall and was described by the Taylors as very strong, was tackled by Mr Taylor and his son Scott, and was restrained in a neck-lock by the father.

As officers went to cuff the individual, well known to the courts for his activities, they confirmed he no longer was moving, either unconscious or already dead.

The British homeowner has not been charged with any crime or offence but is a formal suspect, or 'arguido' as the case involves a death.

The deceased, named today as Paulo Brito, was on remand for burglary offences and, according to his sister, 'had mental health problems.'

Brito also was on parole for burglary and had robbed the house next door to the Taylors' before entering their property.

Police will wait for the results of an autopsy due in a couple of days before deciding whether any case exists worthy of being passed to the public prosecutor.

Quoting Bart v:
Yes it's not enough to restrain until police arrives, it's better to just kill and get away with it because he was taking your 'valuables'..... He might be an asshole but you can't just murder another human being.
Nobody has been charged with murder. We await to autopsy results with interest and whether any charges will be pressed.

The other side of the story, he was my neighbor, i was told of the sad story by the family and it was told to me as was written above, the deceased individual had lost his job years ago and relentlessly applied for work on a regular basis only to get rejected time after time he then entered this lifestyle to which the ending has become predictable, i don't want to preach but who is responsible, our house has been broken into many times, the deterrent was to put steel grills on every door and windows, i never thought i would end up living like this, all i can think about are the wave of refugees invading europe, will it lead to the same scenario, the neighbors fell sorrow and grief for the English family, i hope the drama ends quickly.

He should get a medal rather than be prosecuted.

"The British homeowner, said to be in his late 50s or early 60s, has not been charged WHILE police wait for the results of an autopsy which will take a couple of days." It ain't over 'till it's over. Remember where you are!

Excellent result ! This should show a strong message to the 'Pink Mappers' that not all of us are old and feeble.

Under Portuguese law reasonable force can go far further than in the UK. Over the years we have all read of shootings to kill in Portugal where the gunman got off or had a reduced penalty because the other party had allegedly 'dissed' them. Who remembers that odd one of the father shooting dead the daughters estranged lawyer husband for knocking his daughter around. But being photographed doing it which then got into the national papers. Always wondered if this guy might accept doing another 'hit' on another lawyer.
