Travel in style – our pick of commuter cars

TRAVEL IN STYLE – OUR PICK OF COMMUTER CARSOne of the consequences of the covid pandemic is that a lot of people now find themselves working further away from the office – the rise of remote working make it seem less important to live nearby.

But now that lockdown is over, it may be that you do need to pop into the office again every so often. So you’re going to need a comfortable car to get there – here’s a list of some of the best and most stylish ways of covering all kinds of different journeys.

If you’re trading in, make sure you check out one of those ‘value my car’ services so that you know you’re getting a fair deal. But otherwise you’ll find any of the cars on this list is able to provide fine service.

Large stylish commuter cars

Audi A6

If it’s style you’re after, Audi always delivers by the bucket-load – and that’s the case whether you choose the regular Audi A6 saloon or the more practical Audi A6 Avant estate car. These machines are also comfortable and available with powerful, efficient engines, capable of sweeping away the miles with ease. Plenty of the latest technology will keep you calm, relaxed and safe as well.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Few car badges carry the prestige of the three-pointed star of Mercedes-Benz, and the E-Class is a mighty fine choice if you’re after a larger commuter car. Available as a stylish saloon or an enormously practical estate, as well as providing comfort and performance, the E-Class scores really highly for the quality and design of its interior. Something to enjoy on those longer journeys.

Tesla Model S

If you need a large car for travelling to the office but still want to be as eco friendly as possible, the Tesla Model S is worth a look. This is a 100% electric car – no petrol or diesel versions are available – capable of covering long distances per charge and with access to the best charging network in the UK (Tesla’s own Supercharger network). The spacious, tech-laden interior impresses, too.

Medium stylish commuter cars

BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is in many ways the pinnacle of the BMW range. Large enough to be practical but finely balanced and great to drive – in keeping with the brand’s famous values and that old slogan: The Ultimate Driving Machine. It’s something of a technology showcase, too, with the 330e plug-in hybrid variant offering low running costs and high performance. An outstanding all-rounder.

Skoda Octavia

The Skoda Octavia is absolutely brilliant value. Based on the exact same technology as many Audi and Volkswagen products but available for slightly less money and laser-focused on being practical and user friendly. This means loads of space for all the passengers and plenty of neat design touches. Efficient and powerful engines make it fun, while the estate version offers even more room.

Tesla Model 3

Little brother to the Tesla Model S, the Tesla Model 3 has all the same attributes in a slightly smaller, slightly more affordable package. Again, it’s only available with electric power, but it will cover long distances between charges and thrill you with its performance along the way. It too is spacious, modern inside and packed with technology. It remains the medium-sized electric car to beat.

Small stylish commuter cars

Ford Focus

The Ford Focus is an everyday marvel. You see these cars everywhere because they do everything so well. There’s a wide choice of trim levels to suit different budgets and demands, while the engines range from fuel-sipping eco choices to powerful performance models. Plenty of comfort and practicality seals the deal when it comes to commuting, and there’s plenty of tech available, too.

Toyota Yaris

If you need a particularly small car for commuting, the Yaris is where we would start looking. The so-called ‘self-charging hybrid’ models are able to run on electric power for a surprisingly large amount of time, even though you never need to plug them in, which makes them refined and very fuel-efficient. Plus they now come with up to 10 years of warranty cover for no extra charge.

Volkswagen Golf

The VW Golf is the benchmark when it comes to family-sized hatchbacks, and you don’t have to spend much time with one to figure out why. The classless image – which means it fits in anywhere – the quality of the interior, the ease of driving, the refinement and engaging performance, these are all things that make it an ideal choice for all kinds of driving. Including commuting to the office.
