The police in Portimão have detained a man wanted by the Italian courts for criminal association and drug trafficking
Francesco di Marte is a member of Nrangheta, an especially violent Mafia gang that runs operations in Calabria, southern Italy.
The Judicial Polcie said that the detainee, who was hiding in Portimão, was on the run from the judicial authorities of the Calabria region and was in possession of false documentation.
After being taken to the Court in Évora, the 52-year-old formally was identified and arrested pending his extradition.
Francesco di Marte is suspected of murdering three women in Genoa in 1994. He is an enforcer for the Pesce family and has been living in Portimão with his Brazilian wife since 2015.
