Off-season October saw 17% rise in tourism income

viaalgarvianafamilyThe figures being produced in the wake of Portugal’s surging tourism boom continue to delight government with €11 billion spent by visitors this year to the end of October.

The data released by the Bank of Portugal shows this October total is an increase of €1 billion compared to the same period last year.

Another good point is income in October, not a month usually associated with high numbers of tourists, but for this year the spend was €1.3 billion – a whopping 17% rise in an off-season month.

Foreign tourists have been spending too as in the first ten months they spent €36 million per day daily, up an impressive €4 million per day on the year before.

Ana Mendes Godinho, the Secretary of State for Tourism, points out that this year Portugal has has four million more overnight stays than in the twelve months of 2015, half of this growth has been outside the summer season.
Godinho says the effects of seasonality are being dealt with: the figures certainly seem to show that this is the case in October this year.

Also there is more capacity in the system with new tourists coming in on airline routes that have never been opened before. Traffic from the United States and Poland has grown 20% since the beginning of the year, and Dutch passengers have increased 13% due to new routes and a higher frequency.

The big tourist numbers from the UK, Spain and France have continued to grow with those spending time in the Azores up 30%, Madeira up 20%, the Alentejo up 17% and in Portugal’s Northern and Central regions, up 13%.

Godinho has picked a winning brief as the Christmas and New Year holiday hotel bookings in the Algarve are as close to 100% as is possible, making her job a delight. She now needs to sort out the shambles in the Alojamento Local system to really make her mark.
