Faro - floating body still had phone and money

FaroDocksNewMarinaSmallTwo shellfishermen discovered a dead body on Sunday morning, floating in the water the south far side of Faro harbour.

The men called the authorities at around 08.25 but there was nothing anyone could do as the body clearly was lifeless.

The local fire service, the Maritime Police and an emergency ambulance crew all came to the same conclusion and an autopsy will have to be carried out to determin the cause of death.

There was a mobile phone on the body and some money, which makes robbery less likely, but the police won’t comment further until foul play has been ruled out.

The unidentified body was that of a 20 to 30-year-old man.

Over at Faro island, along the new walkway leading to the bridge, someone has been pinching the recessed lights that enable people to use the facility without blundering into one another.

Since the end of last year, the lights have been disappearing one by one, which has angered pedestrians and the local parish council whose president, Steven Sousa Piedade, said he has reported the thefts to Faro council, Polis Litoral Ria Formosa which paid for the path, and the local GNR, but all to no avail.

Sousa Piedade said of the holes left where the lights used to be, "I fear that an accident may happen; someone might stumble and be hurt. Given that there are already ten lamps missing, I think it is urgent to at least cover the holes until the missing lamps can be replaced."
