DivingUnderwaterA young man was found dead in the river Arade at Portimão on Sunday after a two hour search.

Authorities were called to the scene after a witness said he had seen a young man fall into the river just after 07:00 this morning.

A land and river search began immediately with a team of divers from Portimão bombeiros joining soon afterwards.

The underwater searches took place at low tide and at 09:00 the body of the 20-year-old was found in the river not far from where he had entered the water near the Port Authority building.

Captain Santos Arrabaça said that death was declared at the site by a medic and that the Judical Police are carrying out an investigation.

The Maritime Police, the Public Security Police, Portimão bombeiros and its diving team, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Portimão, the ambulance service and the Judicial Police were all present.

The body will be sent to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Portimão for an autopsy.

A man fell to the sea in Albufeira this Saturday while fishing with a friend. The 57-year-old had been missing since Saturday morning, after allegedly falling from a cliff at Négua das Porcas, between the beaches of Coelha and S. Rafael.

The Romanian was accompanied by a Moldovan friend, 70, when he fell into the sea around 07:00.

The alert was given to the authorities at nearly noon, as the friend only told the Romanian’s wife at about 09:00 and she took a couple of hours to tell the GNR he husband had fallen off a cliff.

The PJ is investigating the case and have talked to the man’s friend and his wife. A sea search was undertaken by the lifeboat crew from Ferragudo while two teams from the Maritime Police scoured the shore.

According to commander Santos Arrabaça of the Port of Portimão, no trace has been detected and this morning the search area was widened.
