Forty bales of hashish, some 1500 kilos, have been fished out of the river Guadiana by the GNR which spotted the bales in the water near Foz de Odeleite in the early hours of Saturday.
According to the GNR the discovery was made during a routine patrol which spotted "two boats on the River Guadiana behaving suspiciously on Thursday evening."
According to the GNR one of the boats belonged to the Spanish Guardia Civil which it turned out was following a suspect vessel. This was intercepted and found to be unoccupied.
The GNR said that no arrest has been made by the Portuguese authorities, but did not confirm of deny that an arrest had been made by the Spanish. The GNR continues to patrol the area to collect any further bales of drugs with the help of naval personnel who also will be keeping hopeful locals away at more than arm's length.
