Algarve lifeboat service busy in early season rescues

riaformosaA catamaran that was drifting around in the Ria Formosa last Friday had to be rescued and towed to shore by Olhão’s lifeboat crew and members of the Maritime Police.

The Police received a warning that "an English-registered catamaran was drifting off the island of Armona, in the Ria Formosa area."

A crew from the Olhão lifeboat service went to the vessel and towed it away from nurseries and to safety.

In Lagos, two sixty-year-olds escaped unhurt when their rigid inflatable boat started to sink off Meia Praia, which only resulted in the wreck of the boat due to the prompt intervention of the maritime authorities.

The National Maritime Authority said that "the captain of the Port of Lagos, in conjunction with the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center on April 23rd mounted an operation to assist a recreational vessel that was taking on water with two Frenchmen on board about 1.5 nautical miles south of Meia Praia in Lagos."

The five metre semi-rigid boat was towed to Lagos to avoid it sinking. The French crew were scooped up by another vessel in the area and did not need medical attention.

"In this operation the SR33 lifeboat from the Ferragudo Rescue Station was able to rescue the boat, which was already very close to sinking, and towed it to the port of Lagos," added the authority.
