Annual UK house prices surge

cottageFewer houses in the UK are up for sale now than in 2007, dropping to their lowest level in seven years.

At the same time, asking prices are continuing to rise, in part due to the shortage of properties on the market.

The information comes from Rightmove’s January House Price Index which notes that average asking prices went up in January by 1% over December, reaching an average of £243,861.

The agency said this was the biggest recorded rise in property prices in January which has traditionally been a month in which average prices fall.

Rightmove also said that its statistics show that interest in the property market is at a record high.

Earlier this month, Halifax said 2013 house prices rose 7.5%. Many observers have predicted that prices will continue upwards in 2014, possibly by 8%.

The continuing conditions of rising prices and fewer properties for sale could reheat the unresolved debate about a possible property bubble.
