Pestana Group is to build its largest 5-star hotel in Portugal as plans advance for the €30 million spend in the Portimão council area.
The 450-bed hotel will be erected at Quinta da Amoreira, next to the group’s Hotel Delfim in Alvor.
Portimão’s mayor, Isilda Gomes said this investment just shows how popular the Algarve has become with major investors.
One problem is that the project has not been approved by the council, despite being given the green light from the ever-compliant Turismo de Portugal.
Pestana sees few problems as it already owns the land where it had plans apartments and villas so this new project is a just a change of use on what it claims is classified as an urban area.
The proposal will of course focus on the number of construction jobs and hotel jobs, the suspiciously round figure of 200 hotel staff already has been proposed, and the booming tourism sector that will supply the necessary 5-star clientele.
For now, he added, and because the project is still in the Chamber of Portimão to be appreciated, there is still a date for the beginning of the works.
The Algarve soon will have a further 23 hotels in Silves, Portimão, Lagoa, Loulé and Lagos council areas. Of these, 13 are new builds and the remaining 10 are refurbishments of tired or failed units.
The tourism figures are 13% up year on year so far in 2017 and capacity is rushing to catch up with demand.
