Lagos council is hosting its 9th Festival of the Discoveries, starting today and continuing until May 1st.
Over the next five days, the city will immerse itself in centuries of history with the theme "A Meeting of Cultures of the West African Coast" with sixteenth-century fairs, historical parades, music and street entertainment.
"This is the promise of the organization of the IX Festival of the Discoveries, promoted by the municipality of Lagos."
On the 28th April, the highlight will be the great procession with schools and community groups, associations and local institutions.
This year's theme is "The Passage of Cape Bojador - The widening of the mental horizon." On the 29th, the theme will be the "Economy - Products Arriving from Afar" and on the 30th, "Europe and Slavery" will be the theme.
The last day of the festival, May 1st, will be dedicated to the "The Wars of North Africa - Clashes with Muslims and Other Gentiles."
The fair will be spread over the city in Plaza do Infante, the Caravela ‘Boa Esperança’, Jardim da Constituição, Fort Ponta da Bandeira, the Slave Market, the Rua Portas de Portugal and Praça Gil Eanes where there will be dance, music, workshops, historical recreations, demonstrations and guided visits.
Many of Lagos’s shops, restaurants and bars will go medieval during the fair.
