The 400 families living on the Ria Formosa island of Culatra at last have Socialist MPs’ support in trying to find out why power to their homes keeps being cut off.
The MP have questioned the government over these mysterious outages which seem to take ages to fix for no good reason.
EDP are in the frame for the seemingly deliberate lack of effort when the power is down across Culatra which can last for 24 hours at a time.
Luís Graça, António Eusébio and Jamila Madeira were contacted by Culatra residents during a recent visit and were shown the effects of prolonged electricity cuts and have questioned the government on why EDP’s power is intermittent and why island residents often are left in the dark..
According to islanders, the situation is getting worse, electricity cuts are becoming more frequent and recently a 24-hour power cut meant there was no water supply.
The socialist MPs want to know "what conservation and maintenance investments are planned for the Ria Formosa islands," under EDP's investment plan, as well as the life span of the underwater cable that supplies electricity to the islands which, if necessary, needs to be replaced.
In the request sent to the Ministry of Economy, the MPs asked for clarification on EDPs plans to sort things out, pointing to the “slow and time consuming repairs."
