The increase the Algarve’s current ‘feel good’ factor, the Silves Beer Festival is back on June 15th to 18th.
Once hugely popular, the beer festival was ditched in 2007 after 30 years, due to dwindling numbers but with the resurgence of craft beers, of which there will be at least 50, Silves Football club is to host a new version at a new venue - the downtown Al-Mutamid square.
The beer festival used to be held in the castle but it popularity waned when the venue was switched to the doomed Fabrica do Inglês and then to the even less interesting, Fissul area, finally closing in 2007.
To encourage thirsty participants there is no entry fee: there is an official beer mug to buy for €2.50 but this is still a reasonable charge to cover security etc and the mug can be used on any or all the days the festival is open.
Any profits will go to the football club which is happy to act as the catalyst to boost the economy, with local traders supplying food to go with the liquid refreshment as well as crafts in an adjoining area.
Silves football club’s Tiago Leal, said to Sul Informação, said there are free concerts each night including Mário Dias, US2, Zeca e os Pelintras, Ondina Santos, Reflect, A Tiborna das Cantigas, Insert Coin e Xico Barata.
