Pupils at the Algarve’s schools have collected more than ten tons of electrical waste which will make sick children happier.
The 9th such content by schools participating in the 9th edition of the 'European Recycling Platform - Portugal’s' collection programme involved collecting fridges, TV and old batteries.
Once again, Cabanas de Tavira's EB1 was near the top of the results table with 209.5kg collected by each student.
Among the waste collected during the school year in the Algarve, were more than 40 refrigerators, 30 large appliances and 55 televisions and monitors.
But the top prize for effort goes to EB23 Damião de Odemira in Beja which was the national leader, collecting more than 16,500 kilos of electrical waste.
The 900 schools that participated in the national collection managed to haul in 413 tons of electrical and electronic waste and dead batteries, all of which will be properly recycled.
This waste turns into a donation of more than €6,000 which will be handed over to Operation Red Nose, a campaign partner.
"The commitment signed by the schools that participated is a source of pride and satisfaction, because the collection of this waste, much of it dangerous, has been a cause promoted by all and embraced with great energy and dedication," said Filipa Moita, the communications person at ERP Portugal.
Magda Ferro, from Operation Nose Red, thanked everyone for the contribution, which will continue to enable Clown Doctors to bring laughter to more than 41,000 children while they are in hospital.
