Vila do Bispo council is to create a caravan park next to the Fortaleza de Sagres, an internationally recognised national monument.
The Vila do Bispo council budget for 2014 included a budget for running a caravan park in order to increase the safety of caravans by offering a ‘dedicated and protected parking area,’ but now reveals this is to be next to the iconic monument.
The investment of €25,000 means work could start this year with the building of a toilet area, structures for waste disposal and for a water supply.
However, there still is some consultation to be undertaken with mysterious ‘other authorities’ which should ensure a delay of several years as the planned construction and service is in a protected area, specifically the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.
With the creation of a caravan park the council plans to welcome hundreds of caravans and motorhomes. Council staff will be regulating the new tourist service and collecting payments.
A further reason for the new park, put forward by the council, is that it will protect caravans and motorhomes from “the robberies that sometimes happen.”
