A 530 kilogramme bull inflicted fatal injuries on his tormentor at one of the many Moita Festival bullfights held over the past nine days.
The victim, 26-year-old Fernando Quintela, was taken from the bullring by colleagues and treated by INEM paramedics at the scene before being taken to Curry Cabral hospital and later to São José hospital where he died.
Quintela had suffered fatal internal injuries having attempted a pega de touros ('bull catch') but was thrown and then run down by the adult bull which crushed him and trampled on his neck.
"He was immediately inanimate and the whole square became aware of the grave situation," a witness said.
Fernando Reynolds Quintela was a native of Lisbon, where he was born in 1991, making his debut in the ring in Mont de Marsan, SW France, in 2008.
The Moita festival is sunning runs from the 8th to the 17th of September this year with music, an exhibition and fireworks, fun for all the family but not for the animals used for entertainment.
Fernando Quintela was the second bullfighting fatality in two weeks, after Pedro Primo, 25, died of internal bleeding on October 5th, having been hit by a bull at the festival at Cuba in the Beja district in the Alentejo.
In September 2014, to men were killed in the Moita festivities which take place every year in this Setúbal district.
In the last 30 years, eight amateur bullfighters have died in the arena.
In Portugal, more than 4,000 bulls a year are killed for bullfighting and other events in front of the public. Bullfights are also organized on the Acores islands of Terceira and Graciosa where both islands have their own bullring.
