Algarve University researcher wins award for breast cancer research

UniCancerAwardA research prize has been awarded to Ana Fernandes, a key researcher at the genome cancer research unit at the University of the Algarve.

The research team is led by Dra Ana Teresa Maia at the Biomedicine Research Centre, who was delighted to see Fernandes awarded the annual Basic Research Award by the Portuguese Society of Human Genetics, for the researher's work in the area of human genetics.

The distinction rewards a paper on ‘miRNA-mediated cis-regulation in breast cancer susceptibility" presented on November 17th this year at the 21st Annual Meeting of the Portuguese Society of Human Genetics.

Ana Fernandes' paper addressed the contribution of genetic variants of cis-regulators, which affect the regulation of microRNAs, for breast cancer.

For the researcher, this research prize is particularly important since, as she points out, "receiving this award is not only an acknowledgment of the work done during the last year but also of the quality of research carried out at the University’s Biomedicine Research Centre."
