Building contract awarded for Algarve's first crematorium

CrematoriumAlbufeira council has awarded a contract to build a crematorium, next to the current Vale Pedras cemetery.

Cremal - Cremações do Algarve, Lda has been given the contract to build the new unit, the first and only crematorium in the Algarve, which will save a +/- 300 kilometre round trip to Beja for families in the Algarve opting for a cremation.

This new building will not cost Albufeira ratepayers a cent to build: the concession holder will pay for the building and then will pay a monthly fee, plus a payment per cremation, to the council. Cremal will be spending around €600,000 on the new facility.

The Vale Pedras cemetery was chosen as the site for the new crematorium, mainly because it was nearly full up. The new 350m2 building initially will employ three people and will have a chapel and a 'final farewell' room.
