Car ploughs into horses near Portimão bridge

aradeA car ploughed into two horses early on Sunday morning on the EN125 by the Portimão bridge.

The 47-year-old male driver was seriously injured and was rushed to the nearby Barlavento hospital.

The alert was received by the emergency services at 05.14 hours and 20 minutes later, the driver was on his way to hospital

The seriously wounded driver of the light vehicle had to be discharged. "Twenty minutes after the alert, the wounded was already being transported to the hospital," said Richard Marques, commander of the Portimão bombeiros service, adding that the road had to be shut off in both directions.

Given the violence of the crash, the two horses died and were removed from the road by officials from the road concession holder, Rotas do Algarve, and GNR officers who now are keen to find out who the animals’ owner was.

By lack of lquate legislation and regulations the governement is fully responsible for this kind of accidents: in the evening bikes and motorcycles and cars all kinds should ware adequate LIGHTS in the front and in the rear of the vehicules. There are even European regulations for that.
Today carts and bikes don't have this equipment and 5% of all cars and motorcycles drive with broken lights (front and or rear). One does not expect that in the police state called Portugal ... So: this is a new challenge for the greedy GNR !
