Construction work at the new Waste Water Treatment Plant at Companheira, on the west side of the EN125 road bridge over the Arade river near Portimão, is said to running smoothly and on schedule.

Joaquim Peres, the president of Águas do Algarve, said in May 2017 that the new treatment plant will start operating on March 7th, 2018.
The Secretary of State for the Environment and Joaquim Peres visited the site in May and confirmed the plant will have the capacity to treat the sewage output of 140,000 inhabitants and will eradicate the smell that has plagued the area for years, making life in the village of Companheira an unhealthy burden.
Joaquim Peres said then that the new plant will replace the hopelessly overburdened old one, but failed to explain why upstream farms in the Monchique council area will be allowed to continue to discharge animal waste into the river, admitting only that "this is a problem."
The new sewage treatment plant also will be producing up to 27,000 litres of grey water each day. This can be used by local councils to irrigate their green areas.
