Works to electrify the sections of the Algarve railway line between Vila Real de Santo António and Faro, and between Tunes and Lagos, will be launched in 2018, to be completed in 2020.
Pedro Marques, Minister of Planning and Infrastructures, announced the welcome news today in Faro: he made the same announcement in Portimão a year ago.
Back then, Marques said the call for tenders meant that the work would start in the third quarter of 2018 and this is still the case.
Not much seems to have happened in the past year - the project has disappeared from view during the mysterious ‘design phase.’
"The electrification of the rest of the Algarve line is still in the design phase, but it will happen in 2018, we have the first works tenders, so everything will be completed by the end of 2020," said the minister on another brave visit to the Algarve, helped this time by the smiling presence of the Prime Minister.
