A Portuguese passport is one of the best in the world for travellers to hold, according the latest passport index.
In 2018, Portugal moved from sixth place to fifth in the Henley & Partners passport index which looks at the number of countries accessible to the holder where a visa in not required.
Portuguese passport holders can enter 173 countries without a visa, the same as US, Irish and South Korean passport holders.
Germans are able to enter the most countries without the formality of a visa, 177 nations hold open the door, followed by Singapore passport holders, who moved from fourth, up to second place.
With European, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Sweden and the United King share the third place with Japan. The fourth place is shared by Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.
The most useless passport for intrepid travellers is one from Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan which allows the holder to enter 30 of fewer countries - in fact the Afghan passport is so spurned that it allows the holders into only 24 other countries.
The people creating the annual Henley Passport Index say it is relevant to anyone seeking to strengthen their level of access as well as to governments trying to understand their passport power in a global context.
