Tavira’s Cine-Teatro António Pinheiro is to be completely renovated and redesigned to establish a 360-seat venue which also will cater for 600 people at events.
The work, to start in April at latest, was agreed by the council and contracts now can be drawn up.
The construction work will cost €5 million and is being funded by CRESC 2020.
Locals have long pointed out that Tavira is the only one of the Algarve’s municipalities that does not have a decent sized covered building for shows and events.
The council says the lack of a suitable venue in Tavira has prevented it from hosting and promoting many events that could attract people to the city in the long winter months.
