Brittany Ferries is to provide a new lost-cost service from 25 March.
The “économie” service will operate on weekends between Portsmouth and Santander. There will also be four return passenger crossings between Portsmouth and Le Havre.
One-way fares for a car and two people will start from £79 to France and £169, including spaces in reclining seats, to Spain.
The service is designed for customers “who wish to travel to France or Spain at a very reasonable fare without the cruise-style experience normally provided by Brittany Ferries,” according to the company.
Passengers will have fewer dining options on board, cabins without carpets, and little entertainment other than access to a film lounge.
There will be 12 pet-friendly cabins and two specially equipped for customers with disabilities.
Mike Bevens, Brittany Ferries’ group commercial director, said: “We feel that there is an opening for a no-frills, great-value service which will appeal to those who are on a tight budget and may not have even considered travelling by ferry before.”
Bookings will be available in a few weeks’ time at brittany-ferries.co.uk/economie but registrations can be made now by calling telephone.
