Monte Gordo beachside redevelopment - on time and on budget

MonteGordoPlanThe work to modernise and improve services along Monte Gordo’s beach front is progressing well with some areas able to be fully functional in March and all concession areas open by the start of the tourist season.

According to Conceição Cabrita, the Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, "6 of the 18 new concessions already are under construction, so the progress is frankly positive and soon we will have a totally refurbished beach area.”

This building follows the demolition of the old bars and restaurants last December. These are being replaced by standardised buildings connected to the walkway and all linked in to new drainage and water supply.

"The goal is to have the beach one hundred percent functional at the start of the coming bathing season. I am proud to be able to say that this is the largest urban and environmental requalification operation ever carried out in our county," said Cabrita.

The original owners of the restaurants and bars now have new concessions on a permanent basis rather than having to apply each year which made the whole business rather precarious and did not encourage investment.

The three kilometre wooden walkway along the beach at Monte Gordo is the largest of its kind in the eastern Algarve and cost a million euros. The footbridge, access and restaurant construction will end up costing another €12 million.

What ever development that takes place in Monte Gordo, it will be an improvement on the old broken down building's of the past.
Monte Gordo appears to be moving into a new phase of it's development, hopefully it will not forget it's heritage and the unique architecture that represents this part of Portugal.

They are obsessed to become a tasteless Spanish costa ruining the charm of Portuguese beaches.

I do hope the Monte Gordo walkway is going to be of better quality than the Manto Rota one which is in a dangerous state with rotting and broken boards, unstable hand rails and rusty nails sticking up in great profusion. A definite 'health and safety' issue.

This is such a crying shame - to provide drainage and water supply is welcome, but to STANDARDISE a previously popular tourist area, precisely for its former atmosphere is myopic and scandalous. VRSA has already been similarly 'castrated'. We love Portugal in her natural colours and flavours!
