Algarve Wine Laboratory to raise quality of region's production

4779The Algarve Wine Commission in Lagoa now operates the only winemaking laboratory in the region, helping winemakers improve their product before it is bottled.

Tests are available not only to the region’s blooming wine sector producers, but also to any public or private body that wants to have wine analysed. Simply complete an analysis request form, send in the sample and the results will be emailed.

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment using infrared technology that produces accurate results at a sensible cost and is suitable for the analysis of  wine ready for consumption, wine in production and vintage wine.

Critical information on acidity, pH and sugar levels in pre-bottled batches can be essential to production decision making which should help wine growers improve quality.

For the president of the Algarve Wine Commission, Carlos Gracias, this laboratory "fills a need for the sector, because there was no such laboratory in the region. Producers now have a tool available for the tests necessary for the management of their production."

Francisco Serra, president of CCDR Algarve and manager of CRESC Algarve 2020 hcih helped fund the new service, highlighted the Algarve’s added value and regional importance:

"To promote the transfer of knowledge to companies in the wine sector and to guarantee the quality and safety of regional products, is a determining factor for the development of the agro-food sector, identified as an emerging area in the strategy of intelligent specialisation."
