Weather - Black Wednesday is here

wave3Following the weather service's lack of forecasting success for the Algarve in the past 48 hours, the IPMA has pressed ahead with another set of warnings including the arrival of 12 metre waves that are set to crash into the cliffs of the western Algarve and west coast of the Alentejo.

The rainfall predicted for Monday and Tuesday can be described as patchy, even elusive, but this is to change on Black Wednesday with promises of heavy rain, high seas and, for good measure, hail.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the Algarve and the lower Alentejo on Orange alert for the sea - and on Yellow alert for the heavy rain and wind due tomorrow and Thursday.

The Orange warning for the high sea is from Wednesday at 18:00, February 28, until 21:00 on Thursday, March 1st, on the west coast of the Algarve and the lower Alentejo coast where a southwest swell will create waves of 12 metres.

This Orange warning at sea extends along the south coast between 3:00 am and 3:00 pm on March 1st, moving along to the eastern Algarve.

The IPMA issued a Yellow warning for between midnight tonight and 6:00 pm on Wednesday due to predicted rain, sometimes heavy, plus hail and accompanied by thunder in the Algarve and in the lower Alentejo.

Then there are the strong winds, with gusts up to 80 kilometres per hour, which awards the Algarve a Yellow warning from 6am tomorrow until 9pm Thursday.

In summary: strong wind, lots of rain and high seas for the next couple of days.
