Snow causes problems up north as Storm Emma hits Portugal

snowoopnorthPortugal’s National Civil Protection Authority has registered 490 incidents between 18:00 on Tuesday evening and 15:00 on Wednesday afternoon, especially fallen trees and roads that have needed clearing, due to snow.

Many trees fell overnight in high winds, said Carlos Pereira, operations officer at the Authority, noting that there is no record of fatalities or serious accidents related specifically to bad weather.

The district of Viseu has been the worst hit, followed by Vila Real.

At 15:30, roads across the Serra da Estrela were closed due to snow and nine council in the district of Bragança and seven in Vila Real, closed schools today due to the ice and the snow.

Following the heavy snowfall on Tuesday, several roads were blocked and schools were closed in the Viseu, Bragança and Vila Real.

Also on Tuesday, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), put these districts under orange and yellow warnings due to the snowfall. Today, these districts are under yellow warning because of heavy rain and high winds.

The IPMA predicts continuing rain, sometimes strong, and hail and snowfall on high ground, especially in the Serra da Estrela.

The forecast remains for thunderstorms and generally moderate winds, gusting up to 80 kmph in the south of the country but gusting up to 100 kmph across  high ground.

Tomorrow in the Algarve:  more of the same - rain, wind and towering seas - with worsening conditions on Friday.
