Faro footballer stabbing - man accused of attempted murder

inemThe man suspected of the near-fatal stabbing of one of FC Faro’s top football players has been questioned by police and remanded in custody after a brief court appearance.

The assault on Octávio Alexandre Leal Barros, known locally as Tavinho (Little Wolf), occurred in Vilamoura at around 05:15 on March 19th, outside the Iluminati nightclub.

The footballer was stabbed several times, suffering deep wounds in his neck and lung.

After the attack, the aggressor fled but later handed himself in at the Vilamora GNR station where he was promptly arrested, not least as he was on probation in connection with a robbery charge.

The 30-year-old suspect, named as Nelson Sousa, 30, also known by the nickname 'Periquito,' now is accused of attempted murder and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Tavinho continues to recover at the Faro Hospital and is already in a stable situation and out of danger.
