Lisbon bridge repair project to cost taxpayers €20.5 million

BridgeDetailThe serious state of Lisbon’s iconic road and rail bridge now is evident as the government has released a tender for work costing taxpayers a total of €20.5 million.

The document, released by Infraestruturas de Portugal, has a deadline of 720 days for the completion of the project to bring the structure back up to scratch.

The public tender for the repair and maintenance works has a base price of €18 million and was published this Friday in Diário da República.

The Ministry of Planning and Infrastructures noted that the tendering procedure will cost €1.5 million and “the contracting of technical assistance to the project,” will cost a further €895,000.

The technical assistance for the project will be carried out by Parsons, the designer company that owns the copyright of the bridge construction, which dates back to the 1960s, and is the author of the railway installation project, completed in the 90's.

The work needed concerns, "metallic elements and pre-stressed reinforced concrete elements of the north access viaduct" and include, "the execution of metal construction, welding, localised replacement of corrosion protection, replacement of non-structural elements, cleaning, treatment and spot painting of concrete surfaces."

The maintenance will be carried out in periods of lower traffic on the Ponte 25 de Abril, "particularly at night and on holidays, so as not to interfere with normal road and rail traffic," stated the ministry.

If you are interested in bidding for the work, proposals must be in by 5 pm on May 9th.
