Lagoa's ratepayers fund new EN125 roundabout

roadworksLagoa ratepayers are to finance the construction of a new roundabout on the EN125, to the east of the city in the Motel Parque Algarvio area.

The deputy mayor, Luís Encarnação, revealed the plan at last session of the Municipal Assembly in response to a question posed by Left Bloc councillor, Andreia Pais.

Encarnação said that the road company, Infraestruturas de Portugal, had been presented with a Council proposal to "finance the acquisition of the land and, eventually, the construction of the roundabout, to minimize the problems of those who use the EN125."

A recent report in Lagoa Informa published complaints of loss of business from businesses such as Bankinter and Sanipina as eastbound traffic cannot turn into the business area due to Infraestruturas de Portugal’s idea of traffic management.

The recently completed, years overdue, road upgrade work makes it impossible for eastbound motorists to access these companies unless they travel several kilometres out of their way and turn around at the International School/Benagil roundabout.

Many drivers do not make the five kilometres round trip and shop elsewhere, or not at all.

The Council has decided that ratepayers should fund the solution to the road company’s illogical and punishing decision to annex the business area.

A new roundabout halfway between Fatacil and the International School will be created, thus ensuring more roadworks and disruption, buy all for the common good.

Does anyone from the council ever try to enter Lagoa from the eastern side. The backlog of traffic due to the two roundabouts already built is rediculous. It can take half an hour to cover 2km. If Sanipina want more customers they should make their business more obvious so that people can see it. Most people don't know it exists.

The possible development of the old Izi building could be behind the proposal.
I have not understood why the International school at Porches has not built a new exit which would allow those wanting to drive east to exit onto the new roundabout completed last year..

What's wrong with just putting in a left hand turn? How many customers does Bankinter and a garden center have to justify another roundabout?
