A British holidaymaker received fatal injuries when he was hit by a car as he crossed a road in Albufeira.
The accident happened on Avenida dos Descobrimentos near McDonald’s as the man and his 26-year-old son used a pedestrian crossing.
Jimmy Blower, 54, from Morpeth, was run over while out celebrating his favourite football team Newcastle's win over Chelsea. The driver, "left the place without seeking to help the victim,” according to the police report.
The driver of the hire car, a 25-year-old Frenchman, was tracked down by the GNR after witnesses gave his number plate and description. He was arrested after failing a breath test.
The accident happened at ten past midnight on Monday morning. The victim was rushed to the Albufeira Health Centre but died of his injuries a few hours later.
On the morning of the day before, Sunday, an 81-year-old local woman was hit and killed on the same stretch of road, near the Dolphin roundabout.
The Public Prosecutor is analysing the evidence and may raise negligent homicide charges against the drivers involved in these two incidents.
