Faro Council has demanded that the government immediately suspends all oil and gas exploration off the Algarve coast.Joining a chorus of protest from across the region and nationally, Faro Council also states that it is totally unacceptable to carry on drilling without first commissioning an Environmental Impact Assessment.
Faro will communicate its vote of repudiation of the Ministry of the Environment and the Portuguese Environment Agency whose intention to allow drilling to start is wrong on so many levels.

According to the Council, all councillors votes in favour of the anti-drilling motion, with one abstention, registered by one of the Socialist Party councillors.
Faro Council says the government is "defrauding the superior interests of the population," and demands the programme is suspended, until a "rigorous assessment of all its environmental impacts is made, taking into account the balance between the natural resources under protection and the economic and environmental value of the area.”
Faro Council also wants the government to listen to the Algarve’s Councils and its population which all are loud and clear in their rejection of the oil drilling concessions and drilling licences.
