Faro councillors irate at new recycling bin locations

farocamaraFaro Council, quite rightly, has the huff with the waste collection service from Algar whose new ecopoints are placed in such a way as to 'disrespect mobility,' as well as being the old-fashioned type, hadly in keeping with the regional capital's desired image.

The Council has sent a stern letter to Algar about the stupidity of placing recycling bins on pavements that normally are used by people to walk along, adding that the bins are the old type and hardly in keeping with the image of the regional capital which is spending much time and money on upgrading its urban image.

The Council points out that some of the bins occupy parking spaces and often are right in front of buildings, blocking otherwise pleasant views.

The old style bins, "are in radical contrast to the new wave of underground collection points used by (the council’s own services company), Fagar over the past four years, which has greatly improved the collection efficiency and the urban environment, as well as the city's mobility.”

Algar, says the Council, failed to consult with the council on whose streets and pavements these bins have been dumped, which it finds incomprehensible and reveals a complete lack of interest in municipal management, in the communities that live here and those who visit the city.

"Algar should be ensuring the collection of waste is done in the most environmentally correct and sustainable way. This clearly is not what is happening at the moment," concludes an irate Council which also is a shareholder in the Algar waste business.

Deirdre,
You may need to take a trip to the recycling centre, as you may gain correct information on recycling and not the jaundiced view that you seem to have.

Quoting Dierdre:
As our Ed points out - the Council is a shareholder in Algar. As always we must stop thinking like Europeans and think immediately of who is a beneficiary of the contract. Who has trousered the bribes to assess applicants for the contract and who chose Algar? Then consider who supplied Algar with the old bins and offered suggestions where to site them .... maybe Faro Council?
Equally certain, what substantial proportion is going straight to landfill without recycling? After we carefully separate our waste, Algar casually recombines it !

Actually that's not true. I was at the recycling plant only last week and saw the work they do in separating and recycling and we are organising a trip to the plant for others to see exactly the same. Whatever other issues there may be, this is not correct.
