Three Indian residents accused of extortion by Silves prosecutor

SEFThree men from India, living in the Algarve, have been accused of being involved in illegal immigration, extortion and threatening behaviour.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Silves has charged the three men, aged between 31 and 51.

According to the indictment, "the three defendants demanded from people from India and neighbouring countries, between €1,500 and €2,000. In return, they promised to expedite their legalisation in Portugal at the Service and Foreigners and Borders department as well as providing employment and a place to stay."

It is alleged that some of the accused had, "demanded payment of money through threats directed at the victims and their families."

The indictment also demands that one of the accused is expelled from Portugal, should he be found guilty.
