Severe weather damage in the Algarve - €570,000 and counting

wave3Losses from the recent bad weather and strong waves are still being totted up but are expected to reach several million euros throughout Portugal with around €570,000 of damage to businesses and infrastructure along the Algarve’s coastline.

The Ministry of Economy reported today that it guarantees to "streamline the delivery of the financial support available" for owners of beach facilities and stated that no new fund is needed in response to the bad weather losses.

The Algarve has been let off lightly in recent weeks as terrific storms have concentrated on the country’s west coast, tearing away beachside walkways, sea defences and restaurants but the storms that started in early January have not been as severe along the south coast.

In Vila do Bispo the bill will be around €300,000 and in Lagoa the damage will cost close to €200,000. Portimão’s repair bill is around €60,000 as a sports hall was damaged needing €10,000 fully to repair it.

In the Alentejo the damage has been to the agricultural sector with flooding and widespread damage to trees from the hurricane force winds that swept the landscape, especially in the Beja area .

The Alentejo region’s farms have lost over €2 million according to the president of the Association of Farmers of the Southwest Alentejo.
