40th Tour of the Algarve cycling race started today

cyclingalgarveThe 40th 'Volta ao Algarve' cycling race began today, and continues until Sunday, February 23rd with a top class field, especially from Portugal.

The 1st stage started today from Faro and 160 kilometres later will end in Albufeira.

Cyclists from 25 countries are competing in the Algarve's top sports event in terms of TV and press coverage: Portugal (43), Spain (27), France (22), Russia (12), Belgium (8), Italy (8), Netherlands (7), UK (4), Poland (4), Germany (3), Argentina (3), Denmark (2), Slovenia (2), Morocco (2), Tunisia (2), and one each from Australia, Austria, Colombia, Chile, USA, Estonia, Luxembourg, Moldova, Czech Republic and Uzbekistan.

There are 5 stages around the Algarve along a varied route designed to suit all abilities. The first stage is ideal for sprinters but the exciting mountainous routes near the end will test the endurance of the athletes.

February 19 - Faro / Albufeira - 160.00 kilometers
February 20 – Lagoa / Monchique - 196 km
February 21 - Village Bispo / Sagres - 13.6 km
February 22 - Almodovar / Alto do Malhão (Loulé) - 164.5 km
February 23 - Tavira / Vilamoura - 155.8 kilometers
Total: 690 km

Portugal is cycling mad and the press and TV coverage will be extensive not only within the country but abroad too bringing welcomed exposure of the Algarve's natural assets.

Very badly publicised and no map of the stage routes - the details given above are not very useful for would-be spectators.
