Via do Infante blocked by burning truck

fireA truck caught fire and was destroyed this morning (July 12) on the Via do Infante motorway at Estômbar, near Lagoa.

The vehicle - owned by the recycling company Ambigroup, based in Faro - was carrying wood and emergency services cut off the road while they dealt with the flames.

The truck and the vehicle were destroyed. The road was reopened in the early afternoon and Lagoa firefighters stayed on hand to ensure any re-ignition was dealt with as they waited to have the charred remnants removed.

The motorway traffic was diverted along the EN125 which caused tailbacks but the operation was deemed a success by emergency services and nobody was injured as the driver had managed to get out of the burning vehicle, having brought it to a halt.

The most likely scenario is that the engine of the lorry want on fire and then very quickly everything else went with it.

We drove past this on the other side and saw clearly that the load was old tyres that were visible, the smoke was black. How old tyres combusted in the back of the vehicle is difficult to understand. Just glad for the driver that the truck didn't blow up!

It's lucky that this truck didn't catch fire on the EN125 East bound, as there are over hanging tree's and long grass along the side of the road that would have ignited easily and the fire would have spread the whole length of the road and possibly destroyed the crops of fruit tree's and vineyards along the way.
