Fish seized but speeding dominates GNR workload

gnrSpeeding remains a national pass-time with 2,244 drivers done for exceeding the limit last week alone.

The National Republican Guard (GNR), says that excess speed on Portugal’s roads continues to dominate the infraction figures. Between July 6th and 12th, there were 9,485 infractions registered by these sturdy enforcers, of which 2,244 were for speeding - just under a quarter.

There also were 489 drivers done for not having an MOT for their vehicles, 398 for using their phones while driving along, 377 for driving when over the alcohol limit, 343 for dud lights, 338 related to tachographs, 308 for not wearing a seat belt or child restraint and 187 for driving around with absolutely no insurance at all.

This haul resulted in 468 arrests, 201 of them for being drunk, 99 for having more drugs than deemed necessary for personal enjoyment, 69 for driving without having a licence, 12 for driving in car that had been stolen, 10 for the illegal possession of a weapon and one person who was driving home after a robbery.

The drugs haul remains an inexplicable part of travelers' kit as in one week, the GNR seized 2,889 joints, 1,009 wraps of heroin, 871 lines of cocaine, 290 amphetamines, 6,032 bags of cannabis, 22,300 grams of cannabis leaves and flowers, 6.4 kilograms cannabis resin, 7 firearms, 4 guns that look like guns but can’t fire, 25 bullets of various calibers, 1,595 counterfeit articles, 1,180 cigarettes, 2.2 kilos of rolling tobacco, 107 kilos of fish (no type was given) and €10,272 in cash.

What I find worrying about those statistics is the number of people done for using a phone is similar to that for drunk driving. Given the number of people we actually see talking on their phones at the wheel, logically there must be almost as many 'under the influence'.
Scary, but not altogether surprising.

It's understandable…. before the Portugese drove a dogcar or a monkeycar. Today that "car" makes noice, lots of noice and that's very funny. So, let's play and let's enjoy !!!!
Driving and security rules? never heard about or maybe that's only for the foreigners in our country, exactely like all that stupid thing about Alojamento local. Weard stuf !
