Minister hits back over sardine catch ban

sardinesBunchThe Minister of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, said in Portimão that she sees no reason to ban sardine fishing next year.

Vitorino’s position is diametrically opposed to that of ICES, the fisheries advisor to the European Commission, which is pushing for a 100% ban on sardine fishing next season.

The minister said that Portugal’s sardine quota may be reduced, but there will never be an absolute ban.

During a visit to Portimão to welcome the ship that has reconnected Funchal in Madeira to the Algarve, Ana Paula Vitorinio criticised the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which wants a total ban, saying that the organisation sometimes goes rather over the top.

According to ICES’ scientific opinion, sardine fishing should be banned in 2019 in both Portugal and Spain, in view of the ever-declining stocks.

Vitorino knows better, the Government’s position is that it does not think there is a case to reduce fishing to zero, based on its own scientific information.

Quoting Jack Reacher:

There is absolutely zero connection between any of your global problems and sardines. Overfishing isn't scientific. It's greed and poor management overseen by a failed industry.

Climate change is also caused by greed and poor management overseen by failed industries.

Does ministers never listen to scientists? Look what's the result: the climate change, the Antarctic drama, the tsunamis and all other geological catastrophies in the last years.
Dear Charly the climate has been changing for ever and will continue, regardless of what we do. Antarctica has a very dramatic climate, period. And ministers pay scientists to produce reports according to certain agendas. Me Cynic? Oh yes!

It's the huge trawlers that catch the sardines, not the local small boats.
It surprises me that so many tourists do not know just how short the fresh sardine season is and how few restaurants make it clear that what they are serving up have come from out of the freezer.

Restrictions should vary according to size of boat.

The small fishing boats you see bobbing in Algarve harbours should have no restrictions. Huge trawlers should be banned for 5 years.
