Belgian scouts help clear-up Culatra Island rubbish

culatraAs part of its citizenship programme, the Association for the Study and Conservation of the Oceans has been cleaning up Culatra with the help of Scouts from Belgium.

The clear-up started in June and will carry on until the end of July with Scouts from various parts of Belgium participating in rubbish collection duties and awareness-raising.

The garbage collection was carried out along the island’s beach, in the dunes and around the harbour area.

In all, about 5,000 litres of garbage were collected and bagged into different categories. The most prevalent was plastic, around 3,000 pieces were collected.

Larger items also were collected such as tyres, bits of boats and fishing nets.

Thanks to the logistical support of the Algarve rubbish collection and sorting company, ALGAR, the rubbish was removed from the island and sent off for treatment.

Faro Council supported the initiative, thanks to Councillor, Carlos Baía, praised the work that these young people have done for the environment of the island of Culatra, a community with its own particular environmental characteristics and vulnerabilities.

The Scouts said they were pleased to have had the opportunity to help in a "very special" area and they thanked the Tomás Cabreira School and the Culatra Island Residents' Association for having received them with "open arms."
