Boy drowns in villa pool at Amendoeira Golf Resort

amendoeiraSmallA five-year-old British boy has died after drowning in a villa swimming pool at the Amendoeira Golf Resort, Silves, on a family holiday.

The boy had been playing at the pool with his two siblings but it is not clear whether anyone was in the pool at the time.

This is the second holiday tragedy in less than a fortnight after a six-year-old Belgian boy became trapped by an unprotected pool filter pipe and later died in hospital. His arm had been trapped by the powerful suction involved in the pool filtration system and it was impossible to pull him free. This happened at the Arrábida Rural Retreat near Azeitão, Setúbal. (HERE)

This latest accident was at the Amendoeira Golf Resort near Alcantarilha, Silves, with paramedics confirming the boy's death shortly after 16:50 on Saturday July 28th.

Public prosecutors are investigating both incidents.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said, "We are providing support for the family of a British child who has died in Portugal," while and the local police launch an investigation but everything points towards the death being a tragic accident.

This was our dear friends son who died in a tragic and unavoidable accident. His parents were there, your comments are disgusting in light of this tragedy.

Jack reacher as usual, is off topic and rambling about issues that do not add up.

the "fencing system" Maxwell is speaking about "happens to be the most killing solution of all" demanding every year hundreds of drawned kids (worldwide). The reson is that the kids cannot open the gate what automatically leads to panic! However it has to be said that "in case of emergency" majority of the parents or helpers do not succeed in opening "the complicated and twisted lock systems of these small pool gates" and as such loosing precious time. A survey of existing "systems" shows that in fact there is only one very simple, very quick and very accurate security device on the market and that is the French ASTRA alarm
that can be installed in 1 minute, cost mabye 500 € and can last for at least 15 years. As such we must not be surprised that 80% of all pools in France are equipped with this system. We bought it here in Carvoeiro and used it for at least 7 years now with succes !

EU wanted Portugal to join the club exclusively "because of its priviledged geographical situation". As the EU wanted to make the SCHENGEN ZONE as large as possible and if the USA happens to be "the neighbour" of one of the European countries
it's obvious EU wanted Portugal in the club to show how large, how important, how representative it is ! And of course.... SHOW cost money, but EU has no problem by "permanentely sponsoring" Portugal.

Portugal has never been a member state of the EU..perhaps on paper. It flouts every rule and regulation to avoid spending money. What money it does receive gets spents on stupid beach buildIng projects. Summer hasnt started yet...

Was this property licensed and insured for tourism ? Also, if this was a 'licensed' installed pool it would be part of the IMI calculation so why then did it not have a childproof fence round it? At the least Municipals should be checking their aerial surveys for unguarded pools and telling the owners that the tourism legislation in the EU has been DEMANDING it for at least 15 years. Ideally it should be as in more functional EU member states; for example - if you licence a dog it is registered in your name. Likewise a bore hole. etc etc

It's every year the same thing: parents asleep?
parents drunk? parents happy as they dumped children in the pool ? In the period 2003 till 2015 I remember about 20 children died in the same dramatic circumstances.
Will a pool fence help: on the contrary more children will die due to the panic situation as they cannot run away. Solution ? the simple and cheap ASTRA alarm system that is used today in more than 5 million French pools.
