Portugal’s weather service, the IPMA, has revised its already blistering forecasts and now predicts the scorching weather from Spain indeed will hit the country, with some areas of the Alentejo heading for 45°C – that’s 113°F in old money.
Between Thursday and Sunday this week, countryside towns such as Reguengos de Monsaraz, Moura and Serpa, along the Spanish border, will have temperatures of 44 to 45°C.
The rest of the Alentejo will not avoid the heat, with temperatures of 40°C predicted across its western areas.
In Lisbon, the heat on Thursday will rise to 38°C and then ease off but will remain well into the 30s.
Now the good bit, the Algarve’s coastline will experience temperatures around the 30 to 33°C level for the week ahead, which, when coupled with a cooling breeze, is just about perfect for the beach or poolside.
