Portimão woman beaten to death by alcoholic partner

inemA woman has died after a severe beating in the home she shared with her 47-year-old partner who has been arrested and charged with her murder.

Portimão Police said that officers had arrested, "a man for the alleged perpetration of a crime of domestic violence that culminated in the death of his companion."

According to the Police report, the events took place on July 20th, "against a backdrop of chronic alcoholism in an environment beset with conflict. The suspect, who lived with the victim in Portimão, struck her head and face, causing intracranial hematomas which led to her death hours after she was hospitalised. "
 
The 47-year-old unemployed man was up before the court and remanded in custody due to the serious nature of the accusation.

In October 2015, a new law allowed for the creation of a domestic violence database and a special multi-purpose entities were established retrospectively to log murders “that occur in the context of domestic violence.”

In April this year, the Algarve led the national domestic violence statistics with 1,450 cases reported for 2017, a 6.3% increase over 2016.
