Parachuting MP, Steve Baker, shrugs off close shave at Penina

ParachuteMPSmallFormer Brexit minister and sports enthusiast, Steve Baker, said his main parachute failed to open during a skydive above the Alvor aerodrome near Portimão.

The Conservative MP for Wycombe, who resigned from the Department for Exiting the European Union in July, ended up in a dangerous spiral as he descended.

Baker’s left steering toggle had jammed - “After two attempts to release the toggle, I took the reserve,” said the unfazed MP, who said the parachute jump had been, “awesome.”

An emergency landing next to the Penina Golf course clubhouse left the MP shaken but not stirred and able to post pictures on Instagram on Sunday, showing him smiling and holding up the life-saving reserve parachute while sporting a studded leather watch strap.

“Pleased my reserve parachute ... worked as advertised after a main malfunction last week,” wrote Baker, “Emergency landing on nearby golf course perfect, next to clubhouse. Wished you were there etc.”

A keen athlete, regulars to YouTube will be familiar with other of Baker's Alpha male adventures.

Quoting Gordon Williams:
Hopefully a full examination into who packed this MP's main chute. Many Portuguese are not happy with Brexit in case it destabilises the eurozone so start with them. Less likely would be different UK attitudes to Brexit. From seriously hard at all costs, medium hard, occasionally quite hard but with softish elements, medium soft but wanting a grip on non productive EU migrants, ridiculously soft but appearing to be tough on crime and anti-social behaviour or even an expat Brit making a cry for help etc etc .... but how many of these follow his tweets so knew he would be in the Algarve and then managed to screw up his parachute?

Are you sure it wasn't little green men from Pluto?
