The city of Faro is to act as host to the Rise for Climate's 'World Climate March' on September 8th, an initiative that will take place in hundreds of cities across the world to demand greater effort and action over climate change from politicians.
"This will be a march for the Algarve to come together and demand an energy transition that will remove our dependence on fossil fuels, promote the creation of jobs in the public sector in key sectors, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to demand that no infrastructure for the exploitation of fossil fuels should be built in Portugal – not off Aljezur, not at Aljubarrota, not anywhere in the country," say the local organisers.
"This is a cause for everyone – future generations are at risk of not knowing the planet as we know it - it is our decision!"
The two principal organisations involved in promoting the march in the Algarve are the well-known anti-oil collective, Plataforma Algarve Livre de Petróleo (PALP) and Salvar o Clima (Save the Climate).
Meanwhile, the government continues to spend public money on appealing a Loulé Court decision that oil drilling can not go ahead off Aljezur.
Taking side with the consortium, Galp-ENI, the State’s misuse of public funds epitomises the partial stance it has adopted in pursuing a not-so-hidden pro-oil agenda while paying lip service to renewable energy targets.
The meeting place for the Algarve is in front of the Faro town in the Largo da Sé, at 17:00.
In Lisbon, protestors can attend the Marcha Mundial do Clima on Saturday Sep 08 at 17:00 at Cais do Sodré, Jardim de Roque Gameiro and in Porto at Praça da Liberdade, also at 17:00
Rise for Climate's objectives can be found in its 'call to action' -
"On September 8, we’re planning thousands of rallies in cities and towns around the world to demand our local leaders commit to building a fossil free world that puts people and justice before profits.
"No more stalling, no more delays: it’s time for a fast and fair transition to 100% renewable energy for all.
"Real climate leadership rises from below. It means power in the hands of people not corporations. It means economic opportunity for workers and justice and dignity for frontline communities that are the hardest hit by the impacts of the fossil fuel industry and a warming world.
"This September, cities, states, businesses and civil society from around the world are gathering in California for the Global Climate Action Summit.
"The Summit has invited every mayor, governor, and local leader in the world to make a bold climate commitment to help the world reach the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
"We know what those commitments need to achieve: a fast, fair and just transition to 100% renewable energy and an immediate end to new fossil fuel projects.
"Plan or join an event in your community. If your elected officials commit, your rally can be a celebration. If they fail to act, it’s a chance to hold them accountable.
"We are at a crossroads. By acting together, we can end the era of fossil fuels and save the climate we all depend on."
