Portugal prepares for blistering weekend weather

6199Autumn starts on Sunday with temperatures in some parts of Portugal reaching 40°C.

Summer started late this year but the coming period of blistering temperatures makes up for earlier, below average periods.

The temperature will be 30°C across much of the mainland on Sunday with temperatures reaching 40°C in Beira Baixa, Alentejo and Vale do Tejo, according to the Portuguese weather service.

Officially, autumn starts on September 23 at 2:54 p.m. This season lasts until December 21st at 10.23 p.m. when winter begins.

Meteorologist, Ricardo Tavares, said that autumn will start with "fairly high" temperatures for the time of year,

"For the next few days there will be some change. We will have a temperature rise on Saturday, which has already led the IPMA to issue a yellow warning," he said.

The IPMA issued a yellow warning for Saturday and Sunday for the districts of Évora, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon and Beja, extending to other districts on Monday when there will be further increases in the maximum temperature until it all eases off on Tuesday.

"Monday is expected to be the hottest day with a maximum approaching 40°C in the interior of the Alentejo, Tagus Valley and Beira Baixa," said Tavares who said the boost is not abnormal but that temperatures, "are well above the average for this time of year."

The Algarve will be between 31 and 32°C this weekend, with some cloud or haze depending on the area. Next Wednesday to Friday the region will be down to 29°C but with general cloud cover. The chance of rain in the region over the coming seven days is precisely zero.
