The Maritime Police, currently in polite mode, are asking owners of boats moored in a forbidden zone near Culatra Island, to remove their vessels from the area.
This initiative has been taking place since 25 October and aims to, organise this space where boats should not be moored as it is a sensitive area of the Ria Formosa and the marine environment easily can be damaged.
The National Maritime Authority points out that the area is natural park.
The local Commander of the Maritime Police says his team has approached and alerted the owners of these illegally moored boats.
The owners mostly are foreigners and their boats are located outside the anchorage zone, mostly to the east of the entrance to Culatra’s fishing port.
"On vessels where those responsible are not on board, a copy of an announcement from the Port Captain has been posted in order to alert owners to the need to remove the vessel."
In 2016, the area off Culatra was cleared almost entirely as almost a hundred boats illegally were moored, a situation that had been going on for 30 years without any problem or incident.
These actions will be repeated in other prohibited areas that come under the Port of Olhão, "where there has been a growing presence of recreational craft moored in forbidden zones or located on shores."
